The most important thing the English major at TCU taught me was how to think--how to read copious amounts of information, quickly synthesize and process it, and then use it to solve the problem or perform the task at hand. When people heard my major, they always used to question its practicality if I wanted to pursue anything other than a teaching career, since “no manager was ever going to ask about the theme or underlying nuances of <insert any book name here>.” And it’s true, no manager is going to ask about that, but he or she will put a hefty stack of papers or reports on your desk, ask you to read them all and turn in a 1 or 2-page report synthesizing all of that information – and usually it’s needed “yesterday.” My English major prepared me for situations like that more than anything else I did in college. Effective writing and communication skills are increasingly important to employers today, and having those skills honed and polished provides an incalculable edge in the workplace. Those are skills that the English department at TCU meticulously fine-tunes for its students, excellently preparing them for a career in any field they choose after graduation.

"Of course it's possible to make your living as a writer, and I do -- I just happen to call myself a lawyer. I use my English degree every day.  Ninety percent of what I do (as a trial lawyer) is in writing.  I must be able to gather and analyze primary sources (the facts), read and understand what others before me have written (the law), and combine the two into a coherent, concise, and compelling argument.  Many lawyers don't have these skills; all the good ones do.  And while I might have honed these skills at law school and in practice, I first learned them -- that is, I first learned to write well -- at TCU.  For that, I am eternally grateful."
