Available Internships

"Are internships available?"

Absolutely. Advanced English majors are encouraged to participate in the Department’s internship program. Working with local companies, students gain practical experience as thinkers and writers. We place interns in large and small corporations in the Metroplex every semester.

Hear what interning students say about their experience:

"I've found my internship really informative.  I have learned so much about so many different aspects of the magazine publication industry that I had never even contemplated before.  This a worthwhile experience for me, something that will definitely serve me well later in my career."

—Ryan Bell

"I am the intern at descant this semester.  Working with Dave Kuhne is great and it is good experience for getting familiarized with the general processes of editing and publishing.  It's nice because it is a small publication and not too overwhelming for someone who has had no experience with this type of work before.  It also allows variety in directions to take your work.  I have had lots of fun with this internship so far and highly recommend it!"

ENGL 40273 - Writing Internship Course Description

Would you like some professional writing experience that also satisfies the writing requirement for the major?  Would you like to explore how writing can be a part of your professional life after you graduate?  Are you ready to have more good answers for those who ask what you’ll do with an English degree?  Would you like to make connections in the Metroplex that might lead to employment after graduation?  If so, enroll in the writing internship.

Students with 60 credit hours and a 3.0 GPA in English and in all courses can receive workplace experience (and, depending on agency policy, sometimes a stipend) from companies or agencies in publishing, advertising, or other fields. Duties are arranged to fit each student’s schedule, and work opportunities may include research gathering, editing, report writing or document production. Students need to work a minimum of 8 hours a week during the semester to receive three hours of credit.

The internship may help with career decisions; it may lead to full time employment; it answers questions about what certain jobs are like; helps to test writing abilities for various audiences in the workplace; provides on-the-job experience; and challenges certain personal assumptions or views a student may have about workplace behavior.

Your work for 40273 is a space to demonstrate and reflect upon the kinds of written and oral communication done in a professional setting.  Requirements include working a minimum of 120 hours in the semester, documenting your work in a portfolio in addition to producing a final project, contributing to online postings with others enrolled in the internship, and individual conferences with a supervising faculty member throughout the semester.
