Study Abroad

"I'd love to study abroad. Do you have anything for me?"

Many English majors study in summer or semester-long programs in London, Edinburgh, and Oxford. TCU English faculty regularly teach in these programs. Pictures will soon
be posted. You can also view the Study Abroad site.

You might be interested in what one of our students wrote about her experience in London as part of Study Abroad in 2003.

Here's what one of the professors from the class had to say:

In general, my strongest praise for study abroad emenates from experiencing (and faciliating) how learning most comes alive when it prompts deep inquiry outside the classroom. For many students (and I count myself among these), studying abroad prompts new perspectives about oneself and the world around one. Indeed, for many, study abroad can be the defining moment in one's education.

Why London, then? For the astonishing level and range of theatre offerings (and it's affordable!), the museums, the libraries, the large and small reminders of the city's supreme literary and historical importance to the study of all English language literatures, from Shakespeare to Soyinka; London also presents us with views afforded from the perspective of the underclass (inspiring Engels' "Conditions of the English Working Class" and Dickens' descriptions of orphaned boys) to those on high (Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace).

London weather may be mild and damp, but the cultures and the people who live and work and visit here certainly are not. The tangiest curry outside of Delhi, the widest range of dim sum outside of Hong Kong, the most flamboyant West Indian celebrations during Notting Hill Festival, .... I never tire of the new rhythms, fashions, scents, and styles that I will encounter each day I get out and explore the city. My five-year-old, Sean, will also point out that London satisfies every boy's dream of endless public transportation opportunities: the tube (vast, efficient, clean, comfortable), double-decker buses, and those iconic and eminently British black taxis. What more could you want?
